  • My day part 3

    Part 3:

I made my way back to the library and I found a good, upclose seat. It started out with an introduction by Douangchay Hedstrom:

She talked about what events would be taking place tonight. From there a former mayor of Elgin, Mike Alf, talked about the Laotians from his perspective when they started coming to Elgin 40 years ago.

From him it went back to Douangchay Hedstrom who introduced a Laotian videographer (Boon Eck Phouikham and Co.) who came from the Elgin area. They played 15 minutes of his video about the Laotian hub of Elgin (Lao Tour of Elgin); churches, Buddhist temples...that's all that could be shown in 15 minutes.

In between the people talking, there were children dancing traditional pieces.

    The dancers MC...

Lined up to receive flowers...even the male MC's!

Afterwards their was some food. I've never eaten Laotian food, but it was good (and I strongly believe -- when it comes to food -- try everything at least once). There was a noodle&chive&leek&egg combo, it was very good -- I had seconds!

They also had some liver; tho a vegetarian, I still lived up to my eating credo, it wasn't that bad (but then again, I say that NOW). There was salad, eh, I didn't eat it -- it didn't look Laotian to me. I had part of a rice ball, because only one was left. Then there was dessert...

It was tapioca based, as were the other two desserts not photographed. I liked this dessert because it was sweetened only with sesame seeds, not bad, quite enjoyable.

Yeh, that's how I spent my day!

Sabai Dee everyone (Happy New Year's in Laotian).
